Arthur Edward Stephenson was the fifth child of Thomas Stephenson & Ann Wainwright born March 19th & christened April 17th, 1877 at Stockton, Co Durham.
Arthur was living at home in 1881 at 13 Lawson St, Stockton with his 3 brothers, a sister & parents.
In 1891 Arthur, his parents & 3 younger sisters & 1 younger brother were livings at 42 Disraeli St, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough.
Arthur married Alice Maude Lewis in Oct-December 1898 at Aston, Warwickshire. Alice was born January 16th, 1878 at Stockton, Co Durham, the daughter of Catherine & Thomas Lewis, a puddler.
In 1901 Arthur & Alice were living at 4 Laurel Terrace, Trinity Rd, Aston Manor, Warks & Arthur was a general labourer. They had a 1 year old daughter Catherine A.
By 1911 Arthur & Alice had moved to 63 Raby St, Tinsley, Sheffield where Arthur was now a smelter at a general engineering works. They had 3 children at home – Thomas (9), Alice (4) & Gwendoline (1). Also living with them was Arthur’s brother, J G (George) Stephenson, who was also working at the engineering works. Daughter Catherine was staying with her grandparents, Catherine & Thomas Lewis, at the time of the census at 62 Bawtry Rd, Tinsley. Catherine Annie was to marry Harry Herbert Widlake in 1919 & they & their family came to live in Nottingham.
In 1924 son Thomas Edward married Alice Annie Machin on November 12th, 1924 at St Thomas, Kimberworth, Rotherham. Thomas of 63 Raby St, Tinsley gave his occupation as grocer & strangely stated that his father Arthur Edward was a deceased butcher! The 1939 register however shows Thomas Edward as a steel works labourer living in Sheffield.
Daughter Gwendoline married James Ronald Nixon in 1937 at Sheffield.
The 1939 register shows Arthur & Alice still living at 63 Raby St, Tinsley, Sheffield & Arthur was described as a fitter’s labourer unemployed. With them was daughter Dorothy Bessie, described as paid domestic duties.
Alice died at 63 Raby St in 1942, aged 65. & was buried on March 21st, 1942 at Tinsley, Sheffield.
Sadly Arthur of 63 Raby St suffered from mental depression following Alice’s death & was found by a friend lying by Alice’s grave in Tinsley cemetery having committed suicide by cutting his throat with a pocket knife. Arthur, aged 67, was buried on July 20th 1943 at Tinsley, Sheffield.
